SmartKem and its global partners
are leading FLEXTRANS:

An ambitious project to drive the use of a key enabling technology for the mass manufacture of flexible displays to Industry.

FLEXTRANS is a two-year programme that is accelerating the adoption of organic semiconductors as a universal thin film transistor (TFT) backplane platform. This platform will be used for flexible and curved mobile, embedded and large area OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) and LCD (Liquid Crystal) displays.

Read the press release announcing FLEXTRANS funding here:

Supported by a €1.8million EU grant and a €850,000 contribution from SmartKem, FLEXTRANS will support the industrialisation and technology transfer of SmartKem’s truFLEX® semiconductor platform to display makers in Asia. truFLEX® offers Asian manufacturers a route to the production of high performance curved, foldable and even roll-able OLED and LCD displays. Through the FLEXTRANS project, truFLEX® will provide an ultra-flexible TFT platform for new form factor displays and a transistor that delivers simplified pixel drive circuitry through high transistor electrical stability. World-leading reductions in power consumption – translating to weekly and not daily charging of OLED and LCD devices such as smartphones and smartwatches – is another added benefit.

FLEXTRANS is bringing together pioneering expertise within Europe, to quicken the pre-production and scale up of this exciting technology. Ultimately, this project will enhance Europe’s position in the supply of specialised, high value materials to this new, high growth sector of the display industry in Asia.
Dr Hugh Williamson – FLEXTRANS project lead and Chief Operating Officer
